In this series, the woman unfolds in fragments, faces and half-figures that answer one another without ever meeting, turning discontinuity into an intimate landscape.
The incomplete echoes, the superimposed lines and the piercing eyes play a game of faulty mirrors: present and elusive at once. The colour, vivid at times, and the areas left in suspension create a constant tension between the desire to draw near and the impossibility of contact, each canvas imposing its own law of withdrawal.
This collection charts the cartography of identities that are at once multiple and singular: each painting layers roles, memories and secrets, creating emotional topographies where visibility is negotiated with reticence. The figures shield as much as they reveal, their gestures and silences forming an insistent language made of restraint and assertion.
Beyond the formal dislocation, a presence emerges, fragile at times, determined more often, one that persists and claims its singularity.
The artist
Born in Canada and based in Fribourg, Julie Maltais, known as Vandy, is a visual artist affiliated with the MAF and recognised as a "night painter". Immersed in art from childhood in the footsteps of her artist mother, then trained in visual arts and design, she has developed a deeply emotional creative process in which narration guides every gesture. When she paints, Vandy plunges into an imaginary world nourished by music and driven by a story to tell. The human figure lies at the heart of her work, which she charges with movement, vibrant colour and emotion. From her Fribourg studio, where she also shares her passion through drawing and painting classes, she has exhibited some twenty times in galleries and museums in Geneva, Lausanne, Fribourg and Canada.
